Ascher Challenge

A new twist on designer fabrics by the “Mad Silkman” Zika Ascher and his wife Lída.

Zika Ascher opened his first fabric shop in Prague together with his brother in 1933. Not long after, as a Jew he was forced to flee the country, and so he settled in London. From the 1940s onwards, Ascher and his wife Lída created celebrated luxury fabrics for fashion houses there, such as Balenciaga, Chanel und Dior. They also collaborated with a number of leading artists including Cecil Beaton, Barbara Hepworth and Henri Matisse.

The fashion exhibition presents original fabrics by their company in a new context. The designs were created by students of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and bring together tradition and innovation with the help of modern technology.
