Curator’s tour through the special exhibition All sewn up

On this Sunday guided tour, the curator of the special exhibition All sewn up zooms in on a selection of Ottoman textiles elaborately decorated with floral motifs or geometric patterns.

As part of her guided tour through the special exhibition All sewn up. Woven and Embroidered Cloths from the Ottoman Empire at the Museum Five Continents, curator Dr. Anahita Mittertrainer will give an overview of the roughly 70 textiles and everyday articles that are currently on display.

In doing so, she not only explores the motifs, styles and numerous contexts of use of the embroidered textiles in urban and rural areas, but also highlights their significance as an important part of the cultural heritage of present day Türkiye.

The special exhibition features textiles from the 18th to the 20th centuries. The exhibits are artistically decorated with flowers, fruit or architectural elements. Their special feature is their reversibility: Equal care has been devoted to both the front and the back so that either can be used as the show side.

With around 70 textiles and everyday articles from the collections of Werner Middendorf and Ulla Ther as well as the inventory of the Museum Five Continents, the exhibition sheds light on various aspects of life in the Ottoman Empire.

The special exhibition runs until 11 June 2023.
